How to Use the Pomodoro Timer
The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method that breaks work into focused intervals, traditionally 25 minutes, separated by short breaks. Here is how to use this free online Pomodoro timer:
- Add a task – Type what you want to work on in the task panel on the right and click the + button or press Enter.
- Focus a task – Click the bullseye icon next to any task to track time against it. The focused task highlights in red.
- Start the timer – Click the Start button. A 25-minute focus session begins. The ring visualizes your progress.
- Work until the bell – Stay focused until the timer rings. FocusFlow will automatically track the session and increment your pomodoro count.
- Take a break – A short (5-minute) or long (15-minute) break starts automatically. Use this time to rest and recharge.
- Repeat – After every 4 focus sessions, a longer break is awarded. Continue as many cycles as you need.

Why a Free Online Pomodoro Timer Is the Productivity Tool You Need
In a world of constant distractions, maintaining focus has never been more challenging. Notifications, emails, social media, and the endless lure of the open tab conspire to fragment our attention. That is where the Pomodoro Technique — and a free online Pomodoro timer — becomes indispensable.
The Science Behind the Pomodoro Technique
Developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s, the Pomodoro Technique uses timed intervals of focused work followed by short breaks. The name comes from the tomato-shaped kitchen timer Cirillo used as a university student. Research in cognitive psychology supports this approach: the brain can sustain high levels of concentration for roughly 20–30 minutes before performance begins to decline. By aligning work intervals with this natural attention span, the Pomodoro Technique maximizes output while preventing burnout.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Pomodoro Technique?
The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method that uses a timer to break work into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes, separated by short breaks. Each interval is called a pomodoro, from the Italian word for tomato.
Is this Pomodoro timer free to use?
Yes. FocusFlow is completely free with no limits on tasks, sessions, or features. There are no subscriptions, no hidden fees, and no account required.
Where is my data stored?
All data — tasks, sessions, settings, and timer state — is stored locally in your browser using IndexedDB. Nothing is uploaded to any server. Your data stays on your device and is never shared.
Can I customize the focus and break durations?
Yes. Open Settings from the toolbar and adjust the focus duration, short break, long break, and long break interval to suit your workflow.
Does the timer work if I close the browser tab?
The timer state is saved to IndexedDB every few seconds. If you close the tab and return, the timer resumes from where it left off. If the session expired while you were away, it shows as completed.
How is per-task time tracked?
When a task is focused (bullseye icon) and the timer is running, each second is added to that task's accumulated time. The total is displayed next to the task and stored persistently in your browser.
What browsers are supported?
FocusFlow works on all modern browsers including Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, and Brave. IndexedDB support is required.
Can I export my data?
Yes. Open Settings and use the Export Data button to download all your tasks, sessions, and settings as a JSON file. You can also import data to restore a previous backup.
How do I reset all data?
Open Settings and click the Reset All Data button at the bottom. This permanently deletes all tasks, sessions, and settings. A double confirmation prevents accidental data loss.
